Returning to Exercise After a C-Section: A Safe Timeline

Question
How long after a c-section do I have to wait before I can resume exercise?

Answer
You can, and should start walking, with your baby in a stroller as soon as you feel up to it. For fit women, this might mean 1 week after delivery. For less fit women, 3 weeks after delivery. Walking will increase your circulation and speed recovery. If your fit, start with 30 minutes. If you are less fit, start with 15 minutes and gradually work up to walking for 30 minutes without undo fatigue.

At this point you can also start specific post natal exercises, like abdominal compressions, pelvic tilts, Kegels, and gentle stretching.

After your surgical follow-up exam, your OBGYN will clear you for exercise and then you can start doing the full range of postpartum abdominal conditioning exercises. Until then, don't lift and carry heavy objects.
