38 Weeks Pregnant: Understanding Vaginal Discharge & Approaching Your Due Date

Question
Hi,
I'm 38 weeks pregnant, my first due date was January 17th 2009, than My Naval OBGYN doctor said Feb 4th, and now he is just circling the entire gap, saying whenever.
Anyways, about a 2 weeks ago, I noticed that I was having more clear/brown gooey discharge it's gross, I didn't know if that is my mucuous plug or nott???
My doctor has not done an Vaginal Examin on me yet,due to personal reasons, but last Tuesday, My fiance and I were in our lamaze class, and I started having minor and irregular contractions, so I went to the hospital, the nurse who checked me in Vaginally checked me, but did not say if i was dialated or if i was effacing at all. which bothers me!!!!! But she said My Baby Boy's head was VERY VERY LOW. Me being a first time Mommy, has no idea if this is good, bad, close, ... ??? I'm confused.
So they sent me to Labor at Home.
For about 2 or 3 weeks now, I get really tight around my sides and lower back, and of course since his head is really low that explained why i feel like something is pushing down inside me. i rearanged my whole house, doesnt matter the time. i can't sleep right anymore. i wake up at odd hours, and i'm constantly having the urge to pee, but i cant pee.
Oh and I just found out i am positive for Group B Strep and have to have Penicillin in my IV.
I'm so confused am i close? am i just going to go on like this for a long time??
I just have questions I can't ask in person, because i'm anxious, i want to know now.
thanks! and sorry!

Answer
Pregnancy can be such a scary thing towards the end. So many wonders for a first time mother.... it can be mind boggling to say the least. Group B Strep is very easily treated now versus years ago, so try not to worry too much about that.

I find it a little odd that they would not tell you where you were at as far as dilating goes, but everyone practices medicine differently. First time mothers can labor for as few as 2 hours or for days, it honestly is different for every case and every pregnancy. It is good that he has dropped, that means that he is preparing to take that much anticipated journey through the birth canal. I cannot give you a time frame though. Once a baby drops, it can be a few days afterward that they are born or a few weeks. It is one of those things that is not so easy to predict. Your brown discharge sounds like it may be the remnants of your mucous plug and is very normal in the latter part of pregnancy. I wish you the best of luck!
