Understanding Infertility After Miscarriage & D&C: A Fertility Expert's Perspective
QuestionDear Brenda
I started trying to conceive January 2008. I got pregnant 3 times between march and september, miscarrying twice at 7 and 8 weeks and got a D&C on the last at 10 weeks. The baby was Trisomy 16. I have failed to conceive since despite 3 cycles of fertility drugs. I am 39. My question is could the D&C have caused scarring / internal trauma? It seems weird to me that I conceived so easily last year. I have had every blood test under the sun and all appears normal. I would be most grateful for any advice you might have. Many thanks
AnswerDear Pauline,
It is possible that a D&C can cause scarring which can affect fertility. You would likely need a hysteroscopy to determine if scarring is present in a significant enough amount to affect implantation of a fertilized egg.
Hysteroscopy uses a hysteroscope, which is a thin telescope that is inserted through the cervix into the uterus. Modern hysteroscopes are so thin that they can fit through the cervix with minimal or no dilation. Diagnostic hysteroscopy and simple operative hysteroscopy can usually be done in an office setting.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
