Fluconazole and Tetracycline: Potential Impact on Menstrual Cycle

Question
My girlfriend was prescribed to fluconazole for a yeast infection a few days before her menstrual cycle was supposed to start...or so she says. Now she is almost 2 weeks late. Is it possible that this mixed with tetracycline could have caused her to be late?

Answer
Dear John,

Certainly administration of antibiotics impair the blood picture and result in amenorrhea and as such you will find a delay in appearance of the periods till the body balances out. basically they alter the hormonal levels and when the levels of pregesterone goes down the periods take time to arrive. If she has no history of unprotected sex she should not worry but in case she had unprotected sex then it opens up another aspect of pregnancy and she needs to do a HPT test or go to her doctor for an evaluation.
