Unexpected Lactation After Breastfeeding: Causes & What to Do

Question
I stopped breast-feeding my son six months ago and within a month I had dried up.  About a week ago, I noticed milk dripping out of one of my nipples. When I squeezed them, both produced what appeared to be colostrum.  I had taken a pregnancy test and it came back negative and I haven't missed any periods.  I don't think I'm pregnant so, why would I be lactating?

Answer
Dear Laura

Pregnancy should first be excluded. pregnancy tests may not be sensitive enough if you are early in pregnancy and a transvaginal ultrasound is a better option to diagnose early pregnancy. However, in a minority of women, breasts do not dry up completelty after stooping lactation mostly due to oversensitivity to prolactin hormone. This needs a medication to stop it completely.
There is nothing to worry about.

Good Luck
