Understanding High HCG Levels in Pregnancy: Causes & Concerns

Question
Dear Dr Johnson

Thank you in advance for reading my email. I am 34 years old and have just discovered I am pregnant for the 3rd time this year. The first pregnancy ended in March at 6.5 weeks because of fetal demise. The second ended at 5.5 weeks in June but the HCG never got over 40 so I think it was just one of those things that happen when we try to have babies (it took until May for my cycle to return with a few issues along the way). Now again I have just found out I am pregnant again. I had a HCG test on Monday which was 4wks 1day or I guess 15DPO and it came back as 891. Isn't this very high?  The doctor didn't seem too concerned and said it was just probably a strong pregnancy but after everything that's happened I admit I've become a bit neurotic and look for every sign something's wrong as if I have any control over what happens anyway.  I'm really looking for reassurance that it's not a molar pregnancy or something wrong with the baby.  If it's twins that would be fabulous, but one healthy baby is all I sincerely can wish for.  Thanks again, I look forward to hearing from you.

Anne

Answer
Hi Anne,

This is high but not any cause for concern. There is a chance that you are carrying twins, or that you ovulated early because your HCG levels indicate a pregnancy for 4 weeks 3 days. Only an ultrasound will tell. Good luck with your pregnancy!
