Understanding Painful Intercourse: Causes, Relief, and When to See a Doctor

Question
I would like know if it is normal to have pain during sexual intercourse? Prior to a week or two before my menstrual cycle, I get intense pain in my lower abdomen during sex. It is so painful that we have to stop and I am not able to move for at least 30 minutes. I have to take pain relievers to help the pain go away. It hurts so much that I am not able to move at all. It becomes difficult to breath and to even speak.

Although after taking the pain relievers the pain calms, it never really goes away because I am still in pain, a little, days after.
Is this normal or should I see a doctor?

FYI: I am 19yrs old.

Answer
Hi Sandra,

You definitely need to visit your doctor. You may have a yeast infection or trichomoniasis which both are often present without noticeable symptoms. Genital herpes also cause pain during intercourse. Go to your doctor for a definite diagnosis. Good luck!
