Understanding Ovulation Predictor Kit (OPK) Temperature Spikes: A Guide

Question
Hi, I've been charting my temp and using an ovulation predictor kit.  Most months, it takes 3-4 days for my temp to complete spiking before it plateaus at about 98.3.  Each day during the spike it rises about .2.  Since I'm not having the .4-.6 spike in 24 hours but spread out over a few days, does that mean I'm still ovaluating?  My temp usually rises about .6-.8 from the spike trough.  The last time I got pregnant (wiht my 16month old) it was a cycle where I jumped .5 in one day.  I'm worried that I'm not really ovaluating on the slower spike pattern.  Thanks.

Answer
Absolutely, if your temperature goes up you are ovulating.

Sometimes it does it gradually, sometimes all in one day.  I truly believe that sexual activity inspires clear cut ovulation and your annectodal report indicates that could be true.  If there is no sexual activity around the time of ovulation, the release of the pregnancy hormones can take a bit longer.  Don't quote me on that but I've heard enough to suspect that it's true.

Therefore, believe you are ovulating as long as your temperature goes up at least .5 degrees.  It should stay up until your period starts.  If those two things are happening you are definitely ovulating.
