Understanding Positive UTI Test Results: What to Do Next?

Question
I had foul smelling urine.  No UTI at the time when tested by
Doctor.  Then tested 1 week later by different Doctor showed up as smell did not go away.  Treated by Doctor then 1 week
later tested for life insurance came back positive for UTI.
Took that in to Doctor.  He wants me to go to Hospital for mid stream culture? Why did he not just treat me with antibiotics? OR Should I just ask to be seen now by a urologist to get to the facts of the problem? Just want to
fix the problem. Seems that I keep taking test's with no answer's.

Answer
Hi Barb, I'd be happy to try and answer your question.  I believe the doctor is correct in sending you to the hospital for a midstream culture.  The genital area is full of bacteria that can interfere with the reading of the urine culture.  He wants to do a midstream collection (before which the lab will have you clean front to back) so alot of the contamination can be eliminated.  When he gets those results, he can put you on the correct antibiotic for the certain bacteria that is causing your UTI.  I don't think a visit to a urologist is necessary unless you have a recurrect problem with getting UTIs.
