AnswerDear NA,
Thank you for your question. Certainly there is some type of disorder occurring that is causing your ovaries to not function. They are many possibilities, and so, I can't give you a specific answer. However, I would recommend that your doctor do some additional testing, such as testing your ovarian, thyroid and pituitary hormone levels. This will give a better idea of what is going on. In most cases, this situation in a young woman is caused by an ovarian dysfunction called polycystic ovarian disease. It is not curable but can be managed with the birth control pill. In rarer cases, the ovaries stop functioning and the young woman goes into menopause. This is called premature ovarian failure. The blood tests can tell if this is what is going on. Again, this is not curable but manageable by birth control pills.
HIV is a virus that causes AIDS. It is transmitted sexually or by blood contact or by used needles (as in drug users). AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a disease where the body loses its immune system and becomes susceptible to other diseases and infections, which eventually kills the person. Fortunately, we have made many advances in the treatment of this disease and the survival rate is much better, as long as it is caught early.
I hope this answers your questions.
Sincerely,
