Reciprocal Translocation & IVF: Understanding Embryo Balance & Success Rates

Question
I am carrier of reciprocal balance translocation. I had several miscarriages in the past 3 years. Recently I had an IVF with significant amount of embryos produced. Unfortunately, all embryos had unbalanced amount of chromosomes. Based on your knowledge and experience, what chances do I have to have normal embryo during next IVF cycle? Is it even worth trying?

Answer
Hello,

I'm sorry, I don't have enough information to answer this question.  You would need to provide me with the exact genetic problem, for me to answer, and problably it is best directed to a genetic counselor to find out your statistical chances of having a normal embryo.  I presume that your IVF doctor, checked to make sure that there was the possiblity of having a normal embryo prior to your IVF cycle.  In addition, age is an issue in terms of chromosomal abnormalities with IVF as well.  This is a question you should definitely ask your IVF doctor.  In your case, donor eggs might be the best treatment option.
