Understanding Multiple Immature Ovarian Follicles & PCOS

Question
Hello Doctor have a great day! I really ask your opinion about my case. I am 25 year old and just married last July and i dont have any children yet. Everytime i had my preiod i suffered dismenorrhea on the 1st and 2nd day but i have a normal perio cycle every month. I had an ultrasound yesterday and it was found out that my ovaries had multiple immature follicles on ovaries and consider polycystic ovary. The doctor recomend me to take pills to melt the follicles. I just want to know if its really safe for me to take pills this time even my husband is not with me as he work abroad and i never get pregnant or have a baby ever since? Also is it hard for me to have a baby? Thank you so much and I hope you will give me a response on my concern. May God bless you!

Answer
Hello Janice,

Where are you writing from?

You don't mention if you have regular periods or not.  If you have regular periods, then you don't need any pills at this time.

There are no pills to "dissolve the cysts in polycytic ovaries".  PCO is a description, that is, it only explains what the ovaries look like.  Unless you are manifesting problems consistent with Polycystic ovarian disease or syndrome, then you don't need treatment.  The primary problem with PCO is that it causes an ovarian dysfunction and a woman then does not ovulate of a regular basis.  She then has difficulty getting pregnant.  In that case, we use fertility drugs to induce ovulation and help a woman to become pregnant.

You mentioned that you husband was abroad, but you have not gotten pregnant since.  Have you been trying with another partner?   In that case, you might want to undergo an infertility evaluation.

I hope this helps,
