PCOS & Follicle Maturation: Understanding Delayed Development
QuestionI was diagnosed with PCOS 1/09. I am currently seeing a fert specialist and taking 100mg Clomid CD 3-7. This is cycle #2. The first cycle I had a follicle that was 18.5 on day 12. This cycle, day 12, the largest one was only 11.5. I had a follow-up US day 15, and still the largest one was 11.5. My RE canceled the cycle. Is it possible that I will ovulate this month, only later? Could my follicles just be maturing slowly?
AnswerHello,
Chances are that the follicle is not growing, and may not be an actual follicle, but a cyst, that could be left over from a previous cycle. Usually follicles grow a couple of mm each day, so the fact that there was no change from day 12 to 15 indicates that it was not a viable follicle. Good luck with your next cycle. Since you responded well last time, it's unclear as to why you didn't produce a mature follicle this time. Your doctor might want to discuss another medication if no success after another cycle. Good luck.
