AFC Count Timing: Impact of Cycle Phase & Oral Contraceptives

Question
Hi from the Tri-State area -

I was just wondering if an AFC count at the end of a cycle (the day before a period) would yield lower results than a Day 3 or 4 ultrasound?  Would this also hold true for someone on low-dose oral contraceptives?

Thank you!

Answer
Hello Loren from New York,

Antral follicles are the baseline follicles that you have in your ovary.  The count should not change at any point in the cycle.  It's usually done at the early part of the cycle because the antral follicles are not obscured by a preovulatory follicle or corpus luteum after ovulation.

Good Luck,
