QuestionHello i am writing to you from the ME.I have always had irregular painful periods i was diagnosed for PCOS and the Dr prescribed Yasmin after a year or i switched the Dr only to be told that i had a cm cyst in my left ovary.I had to undergo an immediate surgery and after the cyst was sent for tests it turned out that i had pelvic tubercolosis. The Dr had to cut out bits of my ovary as well and the left tube.I have no idea how this happened as i have been given all my vaccinations as a child.
i have been on medication for 13 months and blood tests every month and now everything i fine.
i would like to know how i managed to get pelvic tuberculosis?
Can i ever get pregnant in future? i am 34 years old
Can i get pregnant by UVF? what are the chances?
Thank you so very much
AnswerHello Nadine from Switzerland,
First, there is no vaccine for tuberculosis, unfortunately. Pelvic tuberculosis is caused by contact with tuberculosis, the same form that affects the lungs. The bacteria migrates down to the pelvis and affects the pelvic structures. It is one of the causes of tubal damage and blockage. Also, because you had surgery in the pelvis, this will contribute to pelvic scar tissue formation and damage as well.
Probably your best chances of pregnancy will be through IVF. The TB does not affect ovarian function or egg quality so you should still have a very good chance of success with this method. In the U.S., in your age group, the chances of pregnancy with IVF are approximately 60% and are very much clinic dependent. In my clinic it is 74%. I think that the pregnancy rates are lower in Europe because they are restricted to only transferring 1-2 embryos, although the U.S. is now moving to that restriction as well.
I hope that answers your questions
