Experiences with Infertility: Miscarriages and Egg Donation

Question
I gave birth naturally, to a healthy daughter in 1995 and I had a miscarriage in 1996. I was 6 weeks pregnant. I had a d&c after that. Then, in 1998, I had another miscarriage. This time, I was 3 months pregnant with twins. I also had a d&c after that miscarriage, although this d&c was extremely painful during the procedure. I have not been able to conceive since then. I have donated my eggs a few times between 2003 and 2005, so I don't think there is a problem with my eggs. I have been on fertility drugs and have had unprotected intercourse while on these drugs and still, have not conceived. I have been for acupuncture for the last two years and on more fertility drugs.....nothing seems to help. My husband has also been tested and his sperm count is low. He has also been on fertility drugs which are supposed to correct this. Please can you help me ? I just can't understand why I am having such difficulty in conceiving. It is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Hello Vanessa from the U.S.,

If you have not had a hysteroscopy done yet, then you need to have this done before you proceed any further.  A hysteroscopy is a procedure whereby a scope is passed through the cervix to examine the uterine cavity.  One of the risks of multiple D%26C's is that scar tissue can form within the cavity if the D%26C was done overly aggressively.  This is called "Asherman's syndrome".  This scar tissue can then impede implantation.  So my recommendation is that if you have not undergone a complete infertility evaluation, which would have included a hysteroscopy, then you need to have it done before you waste more time on treatments that may not be doing anything for you.
