Irregular Periods After Abortion: Causes & What to Expect

i had an abortion on 3/1/08. since then my periods have been very sporadic and irregular. at first i would get my period one month and then skip for 2 months then get it again and miss the next month and so on. i was also abstinent in this time so i know that was of on concern. as of the beginning of this year my cycle has gone even more out of whack. i had what appeared to be a normal period at the beginning of January. then 2 weeks later spotted for 2 weeks. then a week later had another cycle. and 2 weeks after that spotted for another week and have since had no bleeding. is this normal after an abortion procedure or should i be concerned as this may be something more serious?

It sounds like your periods becoming irregular coincided with the abortion, but it is unlikely to have caused this pattern for a year.  The irregularly is more likely related to a hormone imbalance that may have started with the pregnancy.  You should consult your gynecologist on your next visit.  Irregular periods as you are describing are generally not of serious concern, but it would be best to discuss this with your doctor.
