QuestionHi me again :)
Question about the possible stress fracture. First, if it was a stress fracture, wouldn't it be horribly painful to walk on? It hurts, but it's not horrible pain. Second, I was honestly doing nothing when I first noticed it hurting (sitting at my desk typing). How could I get a stress fracture when I wasn't doing anything? It kind of concerns me that this might be a stress fracture because back in June I broke my toe when I was doing practically nothing. Anyway, thanks so much for your help. Have a great day!

Hi!
I have a question - I have a doctor's appointment set up for Sept. 23rd but I wanted to get an opinion before hand to see if I should try to get a sooner appointment.
Starting last week the ball of my foot started to hurt. It was completely out of the blue, I wasn't wearing any weird or different shoes, I wasn't even doing any activity. I was just sitting at my desk working and when I got out of my chair I suddenly noticed that the ball of my foot hurt. The pain has since spead to the middle toe on that foot. It doesn't hurt when I'm not doing anything, but when I walk on it it hurts, and when I press on the area it hurts too. The pain isn't excrutiating, but it does hurt. The area doesn't look swollen or red or irritated or anything. It looks and feels normal, so I'm stumped as to what this could be. Do you have any ideas, and do you think it's ok to wait another 10 days to see a doctor?
Thanks so much for your advice!
Erin :)

It is hard to see that area, but pain in that area makes me think of a plantar wart... they are difficult to see sometimes, but there may be a small focal point where the "swirls" of normal footprints are distorted. Also a stress fracture comes to mind... doesn't have to be a big injury, stress fracture implies that there is chronic stress on that area that cracks the bone minimally.
In any event, sounds like your foot does need a thorough examination to sort out these possibilities. Probably will need an xray also.
Hope this helps...
AnswerStress fractures will not be horribly painful. They may be mildly or moderately painful. Overall, I think you will need a full eval esp since you fractured a toe very easily in the past. If you haven't had bone density screening, you might have your doctor consider that also.
