Bloodborne Pathogens: What to Do After Potential Exposure

Question
Hi Dr. Saleeby,

I have a question for you and I am wondering if you could
answer my concern.

I picked up a bulletin yesterday and I didn't realize until much
later that there was a blood stain (thumb print size) on one of
the pages and I might have touched it.  Actually, before that, I
shook some people's hands - I am not quite sure where the
stain come from but is there a concern at all?  Should I be
worried?

thanks,

Answer
Caroline,

There are certain bloodborne pathogens such as hepatitis that can linger for weeks on fomites (pieces of pater, door knobs, table tops, etc.) that can transmit an illness from one person to another.  The chances that this occured from a blood stain on a piece of paper would be rather rare, but in theory could occur.  If you have concerns about this sort of thing, seek advice and testing from your primary care physician.
