Frequent Urination Issues in Older Men: Causes and Options

Question
Hello, my name is Christina and I live in Australia. Thank you for taking the time to answer this question. My Dad is 69 and a half years old and for the past 10 years when he urinates, the stream of urine stops and starts. He has been twice to the hospital to "have it cleaned out" was how he explained it (he doesn't speak much English, so I not sure what he meant that they did). My Dad was wondering if there is anything that can be done to fix this problem- he prefers not to have surgery and would rather treat it with some kind of conventional or even herbal tablets. Why does it happen and is it bad or serious? And what will happen to it in the future- like one day might the stream stop altogether and then he won't be able to urinate? Then what will happen? He has been tested already for prostrate cancer about last year and he doesn't have that. Thank you so very much for your time, from Christina

Answer
Why does it happen and is it bad or serious?
Ans: it is due to the prostate swelling and obstucting the urine flow. Over time, it can damage the kidneys.

what will happen to it in the future- like one day might the stream stop altogether and then he won't be able to urinate? Then what will happen?
Ans: Yes, that could happen, then they would put a stent(tube) up into the bladder to drain it.

My patients get relief with the herb saw palmetto but you need to check with his doctor to be sure it would be safe for him, or proscar the Rx.

Then I have my patients take some vitamins and minerals to improve their prostate but they have to take them every day morning and evening. These are:
high potency B complex (B-100) twice a day
Vit C 1000mg twice a day
magnesium oxide 500mg twice a day
Centrum Silver 1/2 tab twice a day
omega 3 3000mg taken frozen twice a day
