Supplemental Health Insurance for Seniors with Limited Income: A Guide

Question
My father(80 years old) has limited income and no assetts.  Is it necessary for him to have the suplimenatary health insurance when it is hard to afford and has nothing.  Will he be denied any health care and in case of emergency, who is resposible for the additional expense?  Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Gary and thanks for writing,

I'm not sure if I understand your question. If you are asking if your father needs to get insurance now, I'm afriad it's too late to start paying premiums in his 80's. What he can do is look into government supplemental income. As these vary state to state, the best thing to do is to contact the government agency in charge of seniors or call a local seniors agency and ask what he may qualify for and apply for everything. Usually low-income seniors can qualify for Income Supplements, Rent Assistance and sometimes Food Stamps.

I hope this helps and i wish you both all the best,

Margot
