Understanding Inappropriate Child Behavior: A Concerned Inquiry

Question
Was sitting in church in the back pew and the almost 3 year old daughter of a friend climbed up on the seat, put one arm around my neck and, to put it crudely, humped me.  She then put her other hand deep into my pants pocket, quickly withdrew it and then grabbed one of my fingers and sucked on it and giggled.  She would never do this when her mother is present.  Her mother, a 37 year old elementary school teacher getting her first divorce, allows her seven year old girl to crawl around in her male friend's lap and when I told her it wasn't proper for a young lady she just shrugged indifferently.  She allows her "friend" to be alone with the two year old.  My question is, is the 2 year old's behavior  normal or a product of possible molestation.  She has never been exposed to TV.  I really like her and would never forgive myself if she is being improperly touched and/or fondled.  I am 79 and have never had any children.

Answer
Hi Melvin,
This is of course a very dificult situation. The behavior you described of this three year old girl almost has to be learned. In truth, you have a responsibility to report your suspicions to your local social services department. They can investigate it annonymously. If you don't, and there is truly molestation occuring, the girl in question can suffer for a lifetime.
