ER Visit for Severe Diarrhea: When to Seek Medical Attention

Question
went to the ER after having loose bowels long enough that it was worrying me. having nothing better to do, i took the drastic step of going to an ER even though i was not thinking i was in danger. really just wanted an MD opinion, but know the ER is used more for non emergencies than actual emergencies. doesn't make  it right, alot of er's shuting down for this reason.

anyway, the MD, a woman who was very heavy set with long stringy dark hair that looked greasy said, "I am warning you, this is going to stop your loose bowels on the spot. I just want you to know that. It is going to work immediately so be careful".

I found her admonition rather strange since I was going there to get relief from the loose bowels. Her "I'm warning you" baffled me.

any comments other than this whole thing is strange? thanks.

Answer
you didn't say what she gave you... I am not sure where the "i am warning you" came from, but we usually don't treat diarrhea, just treat the underlying cause or wait for an acute episode to go away... some of the bowel slowing meds like lomotil or narcotics will make you constipated... maybe that is what she meant, but it does sound strange
