Meningitis Vaccine Side Effects: Redness, Swelling & Pain - Is It Normal?

Question
Hi,
I recently received the meningitis vaccine, the day after I received the shot, I woke up and the area of the injection was red and raised, when I touched it, it felt very similar to thick scar tissue- but in any case, very different from the rest of my skin around the red area. It is very soar, and at times my entire upper are is in pain. Since then, it has gotten even more red, and now is the size of the silver dollar where the injection was. Is this something to be concerned about, or is this common?

Answer
Hi Noel and thanks for riting,

I'm not sure how long ago you had the vaccine but side effects are rare, the most common side effects of the vaccine are:

Redness, soreness, and swelling at the injection site
Other reactions may include fever, headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, joint pain, and rashes and should subside in 1 to 2 days
Allergic reactions like hives, wheezing, swelling of the face and mouth are extremely rare, however if these symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately and let the Health Unit know about it.

If your symptoms get worse or do not clear up you need to go back and see your doctor again.

All my best,

Margot
