Bat Bite Exposure: What to Do & When to Worry
QuestionHello: I am a 59 year old male in overall good health.Last nite,I stepped out on my front porch after dark, without turning on the front light. There is a large roof overhang over the front door, with a recessed lighting fixture.I felt something brush by my forehead, and upon later examination of my forehead, found a single small (less than 1 mm)wound in the skin.I treated this with aftershave lotion which was the only thing immediately available.Should I be concerned about exposure to a bat infected with rabies,or am I being paranoid?
Thanks!
AnswerHi Michael,
Sounds unlikely that this was a bat unless you are sure that you encountered one. Bat bites can however be a vector for rabies. Today the shots are not like they used to be. This of course all speculation on my part. If you are sure that this was a bat bite, then you should discuss this with your doctor and decide whether or not you should undergo shots.
