Red Wine & Type 2 Diabetes: What You Need to Know

Question
I have Type II Diabetes, will a glass of red wine at bedtime affect my blood sugar numbers?

Answer

Wonder Herbs
Greta,

I advise my patients that a single glass of wine each day is considered a drink in moderation.  While alcoholic beverages have for the most part calories without nutritional benefit, a little alcohol each day has benefits.  Studies show with few exception that a single dose (drink) of wine have benefits to health.  There are very trace amounts of resveratrol (res) in red wine that act as an antioxidant, but you would really have to drink an extreme amount of wine to reap the benefits of res.  The added simple calories in a single glass of wine are not such to "shoot up your serum glucose levels."  So if a glass of red wine at bedtime makes you feel good, relaxes you and gives you pleasure, by all means partake.  But ONLY one glass... and that is one glass for the day.
