Comprehensive Gynecology Exam & Birth Control Options for Women with Cerebral Palsy
QuestionI am mobility impaired and have cerebral palsy. I am in university and am working hard to get a business degree. All my girl friends talk about dating and sex but that has never been part of my plan. I have now met a guy who I am interested in but I am nervous about dating because I am not prepared for a relationship to be sexual. I have never had a GYN exam and have no idea what kind of birth control might be needed for someone in my situation. I assume pregnancy is possible for me but having a baby is not what I want now. Where do I start to find a doctor who might understand the needs of disabled women? Will a GYN exam be difficult for me because of my spasticity? I have a GP but I think he thinks I am not even thinking of being sexually active or peerhaps he can't be bothered doing an exam on me because it takes more time
AnswerFirst of all, condoms do a great job of preventing pregnancy and also preventing transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, including HPV (cervical cancer causing virus) So you should use condoms if you are going to be sexually active.
It will be trial and error looking for a doctor from your spasticity standpoint. All doctors have had experience with CP and will be able to work you through the pelvic examination. It will obviously take a little longer so finding one that isn't very very busy (as we all are) would probably be helpful.
It depends on how much spasticity is in your hips and upper legs as to how hard the pelvic exam will be but when I have done them on people with CP, as long as you have some help with your legs and take your time, it is pretty easy overall......
Good luck with everything.
