Understanding Low Testosterone: Causes & Androgen Therapy

Question
I was diagnosed a year ago with Low testosterone.Currently taking Androgel. My question is, what causes it? I had a MRI on my Pituitary and it showed no mass. Also, how long will I need to stay on the androgel before my body maintains a healthy level? Just confused, because I am a healthy 30 year old male. Thanks!

Answer
Hi there Scott, thank you for posting your question with Allexperts. My name is Dr Andrew Rynne. I am a medical doctor working in Ireland. I have ten years experience helping people Online sort out their medical concerns.

The diagnosis of "low testosterone" is usually not made on the bases of blood levels alone. These are very unreliable. Today doctors tend to rely more on symptoms. Do the ADAM test that you can download from the Internet and see how that goes.

I agree with you that 30 is too young to have to be taking Androgel. But of course I do not know what your symptoms were before the doctors put you on this. Nor do I know if it helped you in any way. I mean, these are the really important questions. Not the blood levels.

Revert if you need more help.

Online Medical Support When You Need It.

Hi Scott, rather than ranting about my honest and best effortd to answere to your concerns, you may consider it more useful to simply respond to my questions which were:

(1) What symptoms did you have before the doctor put you on TRT and
(2) Did the TRT relieve those symptoms?

I said "revert if you need more help" What is so "horrible" about that? TRT is what I do professionally. I'm only trying to help you for God sake! Why do I bother!
