Thrombosed Hemorrhoid Complications: A Patient's Experience

Question
Hello,

Just to give you a brief insight. I had a Thrombosed External Hemmorid that I was treating for self care with Witch hazel, Suppositories an creams. After 5 days with no improvment, I went to my Physician, who lanced it, and said it should get better. 2 says after htat(Day 7) I started to get a fever(101.2) and went back to the ER. They prescribed me Flagyl and Augmentin. Said it looked red, but didnt look infected. The following day, DAY 8, I sneezed and felt something liquidy in my pants. Apparently it was an abscess and it was draining blood and pus. I put gloves on and helped it drained, while keeping the area sterile and clean. The fever I had broke instantly. I followed up with my physcian, and they referred me to the surgeon. I went to the surgeon. He opened it up more to drained it, then packed it. I followed up the next day, they took the packing out and said it should heal on its own. He said it did not need to get repacked. It was still draining, but it wasnt much at all.

Now My questions: How long does it take for an abscess to heal? How long should I expect for the wound to drain? I seen a little bit of drainage on the guaze that I change out daily(THe pus is like the size of a small pencil eraser). Basically I am scared of reinfection and it becoming a systemic infection(Sepsis). Thank you for your time and attention.

Answer
abscess healing.... depends on where.... the anus and rectum is pretty dirty in general, so it may take longer.  That is a rare complication..... usually those lanced hemm's heal without infection but it sounds like you had a rectal wall abscess....  That area gets great blood supply so it should heal pretty well in a week and almost gone in 2 weeks.  (after last packing removed)
