Understanding Vitamin D Deficiency: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Question
I apologise in advance if this is not within your specialty.
I am a 36 yr old, fit, healthy female  with no significant past history.  After a recent blood test, my GP advised me to start taking Ostelin (vit D caps).  My levels were 38nmol/L (ref range quotes >50, and optimally >75).  I am really confused!!!  I exercise regularly, lift weights, have no muscle or joint pains (no other typical vit D def symptoms).  I take Krill oil caps daily, have been eating more fatty fish (salmon), eggs etc in the last ~4months than ever in my entire life.  I spend time outdoors.  I use sunscreen on my face, but my arms and legs are often bare in summer.  I just don't understand why my levels are low.  This is the first time I have ever had vit D levels taken.  Could they have been even worse before my diet/exercise lifestyle change?  Should I really start taking Ostelin?  If so, how many would you recommend?
Kind regards.

Answer
G,

A level of 38 is not considered too low.  Depends on which reference laboratory you use.  Read the piece on Vitamin D3:  http://docsaleeby4.blogspot.com/2010/10/vitamin-d-story.html

Make sure you take a quality Vitamin D3 supplement and it does not have to be prescriptive.
