Understanding Cervical Dilation & Preparing for Labor - Due Sept 21

Question
I went to the doctor on Tuesday and was told that i had dilated half a cm and had pains that night and was told I'm at 1 cm now my due date is Sept. 21 when he checked me he stated that the baby was low could it be soon that i have the baby or do i need to just think of it as getting prep for birth i feel lots of pressure alot in the pelvic area and back pain and severe cramping that last for a few mins. what can i do to help it thanks!

Answer
Given that your doctor does not appear to be concerned about preterm labor, I think your body is just preparing for the birth. The severe cramping is most likely Braxton-Hicks contractions, which do get more painful as you near your due date.

As for what you can do to help it, there are many things! You might want to try taking a bath. Warm water can really help your muscles relax and alleviate the pains of labor and contractions- this is why many women have waterbirths.  In addition, a massager on your back or hot packs, can also help ease the discomfort. You may also want to try relaxing or meditation. A chiropractor can also help your general discomfort. Acupressure and massage is also very helpful in relieving pain both before and during labor.

I recommend reading "Easing Labor Pain" by Adrienne Lieberman. That book is just chock-full of great information!

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)
