QuestionI'm just curious, what is the difference between a doula and a midwife? Also, are there men in this field? (non-doctors)
thanks!
AnswerYes, there are men in both fields. Men are not predominant in this field, however, due to the nature of many mothers to gravitate more towards wanting a woman who has had a child herself- something a man would have a hard time doing. ;) I do know of one male doula who is excellent.
A doula is a childbirth assistant and/or patient advocate. A midwife is, essentially, a lay OB/GYN. The midwife delivers the baby, a doula does not. A doula provides support and information to the mother so that the mother can make decisions that are best for her. A midwife provides medical care like an obstetrician.
Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.
Best wishes,
Helen =)
