HCG Levels After Childbirth: Understanding Postpartum HCG & Potential Pregnancy

Question
My baby was born 7/27 and is almost 4 months old. I am breastfeeding and have not had a menstrual period since she was born. I had minor pregnancy signs (very minor upset tummy, sore breasts) so I took a test and it was positive. I have taken a few more and they are all positive.

Is it possible that this is leftover hcg from my daughter's pregnancy, or is it more likely a new pregnancy?

Thank you so much!!!!

Answer
Studies have shown that HCG disappears completely from the body within 3-4 weeks of giving birth.  After 4 months, this is most likely HCG from a new pregnancy.  You will want to consult with your doctor as soon as possible, so that you can accurate date your pregnancy if you are pregnant.  Having two blood tests done 2-4 days apart can tell whether the HCG is rising or falling, which would tell you whether or not it is from a current pregnancy.  An ultrasound can also be done, both to confirm the pregnancy and establish a due date.

It sounds like congratulations are in order!
