Delayed Menstruation After C-Section: What to Expect
QuestionHello,
I had my daughter via c-section 10 months ago. I breast fed and supplemented with formula from birth and weaned her completely as of last weekend. I still have not had a period and was wondering if this was normal? Many of my friends who delivered vaginally and nursed exclusively had theirs by 7-8 months. Could something serious have happened during the c-section that would prevent me from menstruating? I had no real post-surgery issues other than a lot of persistant pain that lasted well beyond the 6 week recovery time.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
AnswerThis could definitely be normal for you. Every woman is different. While you may have some friends who got their periods back at 7-8 months while exclusively nursing, I have some who didn't get a period until 18-24 months postpartum, after fully weaning. I personally get my periods back when my children start eating lots of solids, around 1 year when exclusively nursing.
Since you only weaned your baby last weekend, you may want to be patient and wait at least two months for a period to occur. If at that point you still have no signs of a period, you may want to consult with your doctor to make sure there is no physical reason.
