QuestionQUESTION: First OB- ultrasound today. Was given 5 weeks and 1 day term. Only saw gestational sac and yolk sac. MD seemed very concerned- now I am too. Beta good- over 7000. What do you think?
ANSWER: Andrea,
I think it's much too early to worry. The fetal pole isn't always visible at this point and your beta levels are good.
That's the danger in having such an early ultrasound - they show too little to be useful and just cause a lot of avoidable stress and worry.
The best time for an initial dating ultrasound is between 8-10 weeks. When you have a long and/or irregular cycle, and/or you ovulate late, then this can lead to an ultrasound being scheduled too soon because you won't be as far along as your last period would suggest.
Unless you have a significant history of miscarriage or other problems, I wouldn't be concerned at this point. At this point, a day can make a big difference as well as the accuracy of the equipment (and the skill of the technician).
I'd give it at least a couple of weeks before I'd be concerned, especially if you have a follow-up beta and the results are good.
Best,
Catherine

QUESTION: Thanks. Thats what I thought too. I have had 3 miscarriages in the past. I just didn't understand why he seemed so concerned when all that I read said thats all you should expect to see. I go for another U/S Friday. THANKS!!
ANSWER: Andrea,
I'm so sorry for your losses. Do you know why you miscarried in the past? Your doctor is probably just a little overzealous given your history but that doesn't mean anything is wrong this time.
One of the leading causes of early miscarriage is low progesterone levels. You can either take tablets or use natural progesterone cream and rub it into your skin. If you're not sure what your levels are, this may be a good thing to ask your doctor about, since it's such an easy thing to correct once you're aware of it.
If that's not a factor, then don't worry about it. In either case, I wish you all the best!
Best,
Catherine

QUESTION: So Radiologist called my MD today to confirm Gestational sac, yolk sac but nothing in it. My beta is 7500 and we should see a fetal pole- not there. So, MD said we can have another U/S fri- but end result will be the same. Does it matter for future pregnancies if I have a D & C? Any opinions?
AnswerAndrea,
My best advice would be to let nature take its course if you are indeed miscarrying or have a blighted ovum. A D&C can infrequently cause problems for future pregnancies.
It is harder on your body though that letting things regulate themselves naturally. I prefer to avoid D&C if possible.
I wish you the best and hope for good news tomorrow!
