Pelvic Fracture & Fertility: Potential Link & What to Do

Question
I suffered a pelvic fracture(pretty severe)from a car accident at age 17 and I am now 37.  I have been on birth control pills for 20 years. Now that I finally want to conceive, I have not.  We have been trying for 10 months.  Now I wonder if the car accident many years ago may have caused me to be infertile.  I have menstrual periods normally each month.  I am wondering if this is a crazy idea.

Answer
I think it is more likely that your extended birth control use is preventing you from conceiving immediately. It can take up to, or a little over, a year before your body starts properly ovulating again once you get off of birth control. In addition, the average couple tries for over a year before conceiving. You aren't considered infertile until you've tried to conceive for over 2 years and haven't succeeded.

I would keep tracking your cycles and use an ovulation prediction kit. Just keep trying but if you haven't conceived by this summer, you may want to have your doctor refer you to a fertility specialist. For all you know, it may not even be a problem on your end. =)

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)
