Early Pregnancy Ultrasound Dating Discrepancy: What to Expect

Question
QUESTION: hello!
i have read some of your anwsers and enjoyed how imformative you are...
on july 6 i had a ultrasound and it dated me 6 weeks 2 days(0.45 cm) then on july 30 i had another one at what i thought was 9 weeks 5 days but i measured exactly 10 weeks (crl 3.14cm) only two days different.. the first one had me conceived around june 6th. when i thought i did on the 4th me and husband was on vacation.. well that 10 week one put it right on target because if i count back 8 weeks from july 30 it falls right on june 4th..COULD IT REALLY BE THAT ACCURATE!!!?? thanks for your time and please give me all your thoughts !!! love to hear them!! also the fist edd was 2-27-11 and the second was 2-25-11 however since so close we didnt change it..

ANSWER: Hi Tara,

I'm glad you've found my previous answers to be informative!

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy.

If the only time you had sex that week was June 4, then you can be reasonably sure that's when you conceived. However, you also need to take into account how long sperm and egg can live.  So even with your situation, you may have had sex on June 4, but you may not have actually ovulated until June 6 - sperm can live 2 days, so it actually IS possible that the actual conception occurred on June 6 from sex on June 4 (I know that it's confusing!)  First trimesters ultrasounds can be off by a couple of days, which accounts for the difference in dates between the two ultrasounds.

Most of the time, people focus on how "off" can the ultrasound be, but many times, especially in the first trimester, it can be very accurate. The embryo develops according to a very specific timeline, and with development happening so rapidly in the first trimester, you really can pin down conception to within a few days.

When you have ultrasounds later in the pregnancy, don't be surprised if they show a different conception date.  After the first trimester, the later you go in the pregnancy, the greater the window of error.  Your doctor will keep your February 27 due date, even if later ultrasounds give a different date.

Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

QUESTION: hey i understand what your saying! i was just shocked when that ultrasound put me two days further like june 4th actually did it!  we did have intercourse on june 13th but
i dont think that would be the date i have had two ultrasounds both dating me june 4-6.. also on june 23 i had hcg betas done and it was 923.. june 24th it was 1500..and i think if i did conceived on the june 13th those levels would be rather high. for just 12 days past sex...so i think my levels corelate with june 4-6..dont you?
i know its a wide range.. i read all over... but 923 just 12 day past sex is high..and i am only having one!
what do you think
thanks

Answer
It definitely looks like June 4 was "The" day! :)

If you had conceived June 13, the ultrasound would have looked very different.  Nine days makes a big difference in ultrasounds in the first trimester.

Plus, as you mentioned, the hcg levels all line up with early June.

Your hcg levels and ultrasound all point to June 4.

Sincerely,
