Titanium Chip Implants: Pain, Migration & MRI Results - Expert Analysis
QuestionI had a needle biopsy performed less than 2 years ago. A titanium chip marker was inserted to "mark" the area. I have had several episodes after periods of activity, in which I experienced extreme searing pain in the region of the marker. I am concerned that the chip could be moving. An MRI of that breast was ordered. The results state that the marker is at a different location in regards to a suspicious area that is being monitored, due to "possible chip migration". The pain is intermittent, but my main concern at this point is the damage that this chip may be causing to my breast tissue and what role this may play in the future health of my breast. And, of course, WHEN and WHERE will the chip stop migrating??? Should I have this chip removed?
AnswerTitanium is extremely tissue friendly and should in itself not cause any problems. However the marker was put in there in order to identify a certain location. If indeed it has moved from there it no longer does that so in that case it no longer serves any useful purpose! And therefore you can very well have it removed if it causes you some concern.
