QuestionHi,
I have a question about using birth control. I am currently on the pill (Necon 1/35). I take it at the same time every day (if not at the exact same time, within the hour), and if I throw up a pill, which has happened a couple of times, I use back-up (diaphragm + spermicide) for the rest of the pill pack. My question is, is it possible to be pregnant while on the pill and getting your withdrawal bleed? I have had my withdrawal bleed every month that I have taken the pill (withdrawal bleed usually lasts 4-5 days), but last night I had a terrible backache for no apparent reason. I have been much less active than usual, spending a lot of time on the computer playing games, that is the only other thing I can think of that would cause me to have back pain. I haven't had stomach sickness, tender breasts, or any other indications that I might be preggers. Since I moved to a new city five months ago, I've gained about 15 pounds, but I have been drinking a lot of beer and eating poorly. Also I gained a lot of this weight since starting the pill. If you could give me an answer on whether you can have a withdrawal bleed on the pill but still be pregnant, I'd appreciate it.
AnswerHi KD,
If you have been getting your withdrawal bleed then you are not pregnant. In rare cases, women who are pregnant may bleed a little the first month or so of the pregnancy, which can look like a light period. But this does not sound like your case. Back pain can be caused by many different things, and sometimes the reason is not clear. Sitting for long periods of time is one or it is possible you pulled a muscle. It sounds like your weight gain is due to your current eating habits.
If you are still concerned then you can take a pregnancy test to ease your mind. But from what you tell me I do not think you are pregnant.
I hope this helps. If you have further questions let me know.
