Birth Control Concerns: Expert Advice & Cycle Tracking

Question
Hi Diane,

My name is Marcela and I have a few doubts about birth control. I don't want to ask them on yahoo or any of those websites because I want a person with experience to answer me.

I'm a little scared of the pill because of what I've read about it being linked to some cancers. I have a very regular cycle, very.
And currently, my boyfriend and I only have sex on the safest days of my cycle. My cycle is 30 days; from what I understand, day 1 to 10 is 'most likely infertile' day 10 to 20 we take them as 'fertile' and from 20 to the last day they are nonfertile. Is this a good 'prevention' timing?
Additionally, he uses protection.

The downside is that we're scared of having sex on the other days, but at the same time, we wish we had more than just 'a few days' a month to be able to do it.

What can I do? Do you recommend the pill? My doctor already told me which one I could use. But tell me one thing, does the cycle stay the same with the pill? In other words, from day 10-20 and also being under the pill, could I consider those days 99.9% safe and even have sex without protection?

I've always had the doubt. I'm just 25 years old and haven't had babies, so a lot of the other birth control methods wouldn't work.
Please let me know what you recommend.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Marcela

Answer
Hi Marcela,

Thanks for your question. I don't recommend any kind of hormonal birth control methods. This is because of my research about risks and side effects of the pill and other hormonal methods. I see that you have been doing research also and have seen about the risk of cancer. Also, what do you mean about your boyfriend using protection? Do you mean condoms?

If you want to have no doubts or worries, please consider refraining from sex until you are married. There really is no 100% safe method to prevent pregnancy. So it is better to be married just in case you do get pregnant. I will release all your worries. Please email me at CHERYL51@aol.com so we can talk more. I will be glad to hear from you and talk more about these subjects.
