QuestionI had my first baby in March 2010, and in April, I had Mirena put in place. At first, everything was fine, but now I'm having some serious problems. I'm cramping severely enough to throw up and not be able to move. My period lasts for about 10 to 12 days, but it's not heavy. The worst of it is that it hurts to have sex. It hurts so badly, I am starting to not even want to have sex. I also have been getting random shooting pains up my sides and around my ovaries. I talked to my doctor about this, and he didn't seem to take me seriously. He told me to take ibuprofen to manage the pain, which also doesn't seem very safe to me because I am breast feeding and that would also mean that I am taking the ibuprofen for twelve days a month. I'm seriously concerned that something has gone wrong like the iud embedding, or pelvic inflammatory disease, but would like to know if this is a realistic concern or if this is something that I can manage with the painkillers as my insurance makes getting a second opinion very pricey.
AnswerDear Hannah,
It sounds to me like a serious problem, whether it's pelvic inflammatory disease, embedded IUD, or something else. Since getting a second opinion is very pricey, an alternative would be to ask your doctor or another doctor to remove the Mirena. I suspect that your pain will go away once the IUD is removed. Best wishes.
