Understanding Uterine Polyp Removal with Hysteroscopy

Question
I have been seeing a Ob/Gyn specialist (a reproductive endocrinologist) regarding infertility (18 months of trying).

She has found 2 uterine polyps that she wants to remove through operative hysteroscopy (One is smaller, but the larger one is 0.8 inches).  I have been having a lot of problems with spotting every month (not always heavy, but spotting all but about 5 days a month).  She wants me take a Lupron shot a month before the surgery (I think to thin the lining).  If not absolutely necessary, I would really like to avoid this shot (very expensive and not sure of long term health risks).  I asked if I could take the birth control pill instead, and she said no and that would make it worse.

I also have spotting after intercourse which I thought could be caused by the polyps, but the RE said they aren't likely causing this.  Pap is normal, so I'm at a loss as to the problem.

Is there a benefit or necessity to the Lupron shot that you know of?  I will have the polyps removed, but am really uncomfortable with the Lupron shot.  (I also have high FSH - 13 on day 3 and I'm 35, so whatever I do I am told I should move quickly).

Thank you for your input.

Answer
Hi Lisa,
I suppose the main benefit of the lupron shot is so there will be less bleeding at the time of the hysteroscopy.  It may also shrink the polyp some.  However, in my experience, it's not standard practice to use lupron before removing a polyp by hysteroscope.  Since you prefer to avoid it, I would request that the lupron not be given.  If the doctor insists, you might get a second opinion.  By the way, I suspect that your spotting after intercourse is caused by the polyps, and will be gone when the polyps are gone.  Best wishes.
