Question"Dear Danielle,
I had my first aspiration on June 20th this year, i was 6 weeks into the pregnancy at the time, it was my first pregnancy ever. Two weeks later, I went back for an ultrasound, and they told me I had a continuing pregnancy and the aspiration procedure needs to be repeated, so I had the surgery done again on that day. I have not been sexually active since the first aspiration. I've been bleeding on and off since the second procedure on July 7th, so I went to my gynecologist for a checkup, she told me that i might have retained tissue in my uterus, and gave me misoprostol, hoping that it can help me to expel the retained linings. I bleed several big clots after taking the misoprostol for 2 days and went back for another checkup on August 15th. The doctor told me it looked good, even though there might still be some blood in my uterus, my beta hcg level from the previous checkup (August 11) was 14.5. She told me not to worry much and have my blood drawn again. I got a call later 2 days later, and the doctor wants me to go back for another blood test b/c my level only went down about 1 point from the last blood test. My period came on August 16th (I was on loestrin birth control's placebo pills), and it continued for 5 days like a normal period i had before the d&c. The bleeding stopped on the 5th day and i thought all these bleeding might finally be over. However, today, i started to bleed again, it's very dark redish blood, and it gushed out in large amount and stopped, I'm not continuously bleeding.
Danielle, can you help me out on the problem? What does it mean when my hcg level doesn't drop much even two months post surgery? I don't think i have an infection b/c I dont have any fevers, and the discharge/blood doesn't smell. I'd been taking antibiotics for a while after the 2nd surgery and the doctor told me I dont have an infection. Also, what could be the reason for continued bleeding? Do you think another d&c needs to be done? I really wish I don't need another surgery because it was already done twice and I dont want it to scar my uterus too much and jeopardize my future fertility, my finance and i are planning to have kids in two years.
Thank you so much for your help.
Kristy
AnswerHi Kristy :)
Well first-don't worry about future fertility, you'll be fine if the procedures are done by professional doctors.
The bleeding doesn't sound abnormal, and it's definitely great that it doesn't smell. It'd be really odd that any tissue is still there after a d&c and the medication.
You're seeing the doctor again, right? That would be the #1 thing to do if you're ever unsure.
Because of the misopristol, you may still have some bleeding. Some women bleed off and on for quite a bit after the procedure. The only worrying point is if you soak up a pad in an hour or less, which is a sign you need to go to an emergency room. Usually with both procedures separately there is bleeding, and I'm thinking that since you also were given the medication, it would not be surprising to have some on/off bleeding for a bit. It could just be your uterus making that last effort to get rid of everything.
As to the hcg levels-I'm baffled. Usually they're gone within 60 days. However, it going down is a good sign. My apologies for not being able to help you more, but you'll be fine. It may take some more tests, but I CAN assure you your uterus will be ready to go whenever you and your guy are ready to do so.
