QuestionHi, i am concerned because I was not asked to return for a follow up appointment after my medical abortion which I had at 7 weeks on December 22nd 2007. I am very paranoid about infection or complications, although I have no symptons, and was wondering what I should do. I had an injection of Anti-D as i have a negative blood group but I do not know if this completely protects me.
Also how likely is it that I will have complications in the future when I want to get pregnant?
Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
Jean
AnswerPlease make an appointment immediately to see your doctor for a follow-up. Even if the clinic does not automatically give you an appointment, you should definitely try to see the doctor two weeks after your abortion to make sure that all the products of the pregnancy were completely expelled, that there were no complications or infections, and that your cervix is tightly closed again. You are right to be concerned. Your health is ultimately your responsibility, and kudos to you for taking care of yourself.
If your abortion was early (less than 12 weeks pregnant), uncomplicated, and performed by a doctor, you are safe. More than 45% of women in USA undergo an abortion at some point in their lives, and there are many studies that show that uncomplicated early abortions do not affect future fertility in any way. Your future fertility is far more affected by giving birth than such an abortion. So rest assured: your abortion has not damaged your future chances of getting pregnant or having a successful and safe pregnancy and childbirth.
