Molar Pregnancy History & Medical Abortion: Risks & Safety
QuestionHello Dr. Joan, I am 35 and had a molar pregnancy 10 years ago that resulted in a choriocarcinoma, for which I successfully received chemotherapy treatment. I am now 4 weeks pregnant and considering the medical abortion pill, but am concerned about my past medical history and also concerned that this might be another molar. Will an HCG test be sufficient to see if it is molar, and if it is not, is the medical abortion safe for me? Thank you very much.
AnswerDear Emily,
The abortion pill is safe in this situation. The chances of a repeat molar pregnancy are extremely small. However, you do need to tell the doctor your past history, so that they can follow your hormone level when it is complete, and make sure it goes down to zero.
I hope this is helpful.
