Post-Abortion Tissue Retention: Understanding Delayed Passage & Next Steps

Question
I had my medical abortion done on September 1st, I went back in for my follow up visit and was told that I still had tissue that had not passed, I was also told based on the ultra sound I was no longer pregnant but my pregnancy test was still show positive. I was 6 weeks pregnant at the time of the abortion. I still have not passed any additonal tissue since my visit last week and was told an aspiration would be done if I did not pass the tissue by this wednesday.  My question is, is this neccessary since I'm no longer pregnant, will I get a period if this tissue has not yet passed, how long will I bleed off and on and how long will my pregnancy test continue to show positive? I'm really iritated because it was my understanding that this tissue will eventually pass naturally, I do not want an aspiration performed and I would like to know what my options are.

Answer
We often have our patients repeat the Misoprostol Protocol before performing an aspiration procedure.  We give it two attempts then perform the aspiration.  many of our patients are will to do 3 attempts.  I must admit it does work and prevents an aspiration.
