Hiatal Hernia and Massage Therapy: Exploring Effectiveness & Options
QuestionHello; i'm writing to ask about the effectiveness of massage therapy for a Hiatal hernia. I was diagnosed with a slight Hiatal Hernia a few months back and was told by my doctor that massage therapy would do nothing for this condition. He dismissed the therapy totally and suggested i go the diet and medication route. I've read many articles written by massage therapist that swear by their techniques to alleviate and even cure a Hiatal hernia. I don't know what to believe. I'd really like to hear your opinion. I prefer to go the holisic route in treating this condition. What is your opinion on this matter? Thanks for your answer.
AnswerTheodre,
Hi. Well, as a massage therapist, I can't just say that your doctor is wrong. However, if you feel that your doctor is dismissing a possibly helpful therapy out of hand, then perhaps seeing another doctor for a second opinion would make you more at ease with whatever you decide to do. If you are reading about massage therapists who treat hiatal hernias, call them to ask what it is about the technique used that cures the ailment, etc. They should be able to give you a clear, concise answer and be willing to answer. If you want to go the holistic route all the way, you might consult with a naturopath or chiropractor as well, for ideas and opinions. Good luck to you!
