Lower Back Knot Pain: Causes, Relief & When to See a Doctor

Question
Hi Michael,

I am a 24 year old, physically active woman. I have had large knots on either side of my spine (almost exactly level with each other) for about a year. They lie right on the sway of my lower back.  I am near desperate for them to go away.  By the end of the day, it feels like there is a large needle stuck in them.  I try and get my husband to rub them out, but the pain is unreal...  Is this something I should go to a massage therapist for?  What in the world caused them?  I am thinking it is my posture, or because I sit at a desk all day most likely with poor posture.  Any advice would be great!  Thanks so much!

Elaine

Answer
Thanks for you inquiry, Elaine.

First thing you should do is ask yourself, "Do I remember any injury in the past that might cause this to flare up now?"  As a young, physically active woman, "Am I physically stretching my body every day to maintain flexibility?", "Have I been ignoring my body with all the activity I have been doing?" The other questions are in your own description above. What you likely have now is the overall accumulation of what has been described and it probably is genetically predisposed to concentrate in the area(s) you are currently experiencing.

Before you seek out a massage therapist for aid, I would recommend that you consult either with your family physician or chiropractor to determine whether what you're feeling is structurally- or muscular-caused. Then seek appropriate treatment based on that diagnosis.

Hope that gives you some guidance.
Michael, LMT
