QuestionAfter having read several things about MMA and things about nails being inappropriately filed in discount salons (and my own bad experience with having my fingers hurt after service and my nails growing back badly after having acrylics removed), I am curious if you could advise me on the best way to find a good safe nail salon to go too?
Also is there a difference in an American manicure and a French manicure?
AnswerDear Amanda,
Regrettably, there is no fool proof way to find a reputable salon. At most, all you can do is avoid salons that do service within 45min, who are untidy, etc.
You could call and ask:
1) proof of diploma
2) proof of certification for use of an efile
3) MSDS sheet for products used (it's a Material Safety & Data Sheet)
4) ask to see if files and tools are sanitized and disinfected OR if new ones are used on each an every client....
Another option, if you live in the states, is to go to the beautytech.com website. This is a website for professional technicians only. Read the message boards for a bit, see who seems to have the best reputation and most skill, and speak to them about referring you to a technician in your area. It's a site full of talented, conscientious, and skilled technicians for whom natural nail health is as important if not more so, than a great set of enhancements.
A french manicure is where pink and white are used. Pink in the nail bed, and a sharp WHITE-WHITE used on the free edge.
An American manicure tends to be more natural looking and not as stark, with a beige used instead of the sharp white.
Best regards
