Natural Makeup for Mature Skin: A Simple Guide

Question
QUESTION: Hi Elaine,

I'm almost 60 years old, and, I'm sorry to say, I've never really paid much attention to make up.  I've always worn foundation, blush, pencil eye liner, and lipstick, but that's about it.   No eye shadow, no mascara, etc.  A good friend is getting married at the end of the month, and I'd like for my make up to look natural, yet extra nice.  At the same time, I don't want to spend a lot of money on this, when I know it will probably be months before I'll wear the make up again.  (I'm a homemaker and don't go out very often anymore.)

Can you recommend a good drugstore waterproof (there will probably be some tears at the wedding) pencil eyeliner and mascara?  I've done some online research, but all of the bloggers have different opinions -- and I think I'd trust your opinion more than I would theirs.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Gracie

ANSWER: Hello there Gracie :)

Your email made me smile as I could read your emotion of the upcoming wedding. I'm more than happy to suggest how you can be ready for this happy event!

I'd like to start by writing the bloggers write their opinion of a product. Also, everyone's skin is different so what may work for them, may not work for someone else. That being said, this is what I tell my clients and anyone that asks for makeup advise.
Start by eating well, drinking 8-10 glasses of water daily - this will do wonders for your skin and moisturize.

Here are my suggestions for waterproof mascara:

- Maybelline's GREAT LASH mascara ( I have and bought hundreds of high cost mascaras and find my self going back to this bright pink tube ) works great if you like volume, and doesn't smudge. I use this on brides and so far no complaints :)
- Neutrogena healthy VOLUME mascara is another one I keep because I like a lot of Neutrogena's products and this mascara is good too. The only thing that is a small complaint is that the brush is a bit big to work on bottom lashes.

I always like to suggest a couple of options but the Maybelline is my favorite and the price is about $6 depending on what part of the US you live in

Suggestion for an eyeliner is:

- Maybelline's Unstoppable Smudge- Proof Waterproof Eyeliner (about $6 ) try this in brown as it will soften your eyes - black is too harsh
-L'Oreal Wear Infinite Waterproof Eyeliner in Expresso (about $9)

I'd like to also suggest a few tips to get your skin and makeup wedding ready.

- Use a good moisturizer and serum
My top secret drugstore product is Dermasilk 5 Minute Facelift Instant Tightening Serum. Its main ingredient is Helix Aspersa (which triggers regeneration of skin damage)
Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Moisturizer is another drugstore favorite.

I'm not sure which foundation you are using but I'd like to suggest L'Oreal's Age Perfect Skin- supporting and Hydrating Makeup (it has a SPF 12 )

If you use eyeshadow, make sure it's not too glittery.

Blush: Smile as you apply it and brush it in circular motions to the eye temple. This will look as though you have a small facelift :)

Lipstick tips: Use a nude pencil to outline your lips, apply your lipstick and then use a pressed powder to complete the look.

Hope this helps and I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have :)

I would love to hear back from you and your feedback

Hope you have a GREAT time at your friend's wedding and Happy Mother's Day to you if you are mom

Take care
Warmly
Elaine :)

QUESTION: Oh my gosh!  I logged in my rating and just realized I forgot to ask something else.  I'm so sorry.  :(

Anyway, as you'll see when you read the rating, I SO appreciate all of your suggestions and ideas.  They're EXTREMELY helpful.  What I forgot to ask, though, Elaine, is whether or not you can recommend a good drugstore product to remove the waterproof eye make up (which I've heard can be a bear to remove).  In the past, on those exceptionally rare occasions when I've worn mascara, I've used baby oil to get it off.  I don't think, though, the mascara has been waterproof, although I'm not sure.

Any suggestions would be so appreciated.  Thank you again for all of your help!

Answer
Hello Gracie :)

You're very welcome - my pleasure :)

Oh yes, I agree, water prood mascara is tough to remove.

I actually use Vaseline and also have Neutrogena oil free makeup remover when I've applied large amounts of mascara.

Please know that you can contact me even after the questions are answered.
I'm here to help!!

I'd love to hear all about the wedding - have fun my dear!

Warmly,

Elaine :)
